In the year 2014, Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi proposed to observe 21st June as International Yoga Day. The proposal was also favored by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Thereafter, the first International Yoga Day was observed on 21st June 2015. The proposal offered by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was supported by the United Nations. The decision was taken and appreciated and supported by spiritual leaders and yoga practitioners all around the world.
History of International Yoga Day
Although the first International Yoga Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm in different parts of the world, it was a special day, especially for India. This is because yoga originated in India in ancient times and it was a matter of pride for us to be get recognized at this stage. Thus, this day was celebrated on a large scale in our country too. In honor of this day, a big event was organized at Rajpath, Delhi. The event was attended by our honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and famous personalities from around eighty-four countries. In addition, the general public gathered in large numbers for this first International Yoga Day observance. 21 yoga asanas were performed during this mass yoga gathering. Trained yoga instructors guided people to perform these yoga asanas and people followed them enthusiastically.
This event also received two Guinness World Records. Records were set for the largest yoga class consisting of 35,985 participants and the largest number of participating nations. The arrangement was arranged by the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga, and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy (AYUSH). Ayush Minister Shripad Yesso Naik also received an award for the same. Many yoga camps were organized at various places in the country.
People gathered in parks, community halls, and other places to perform yoga asanas. Yoga instructors volunteered to lead people to make these yoga sessions a success. The general public showed tremendous enthusiasm for the event. Not only people living in metros but people living in rural areas also attended and participated in these yoga sessions. It was a magnificent event as on 21 June 2015, coincidentally it was a Sunday, so such large participation was achieved.
On the same day, the National Cadet Corps (NCC) entered the Limca Book of Records for the 'Largest Yoga performance together by a single uniformed youth organization at various venues. So, all in all, it was a great beginning. People not only came out in large numbers to participate on International Yoga Day but were also inspired to incorporate yoga into their daily routine. A large number of people enrolled in yoga training centers for various yoga sessions after International Yoga Day.
People in India already knew about the importance of yoga but the beginning of International Yoga Day gave it more power. This prompted us to adopt this ancient legacy to turn into our routine for a healthier lifestyle. On the other hand, it was a new concept for many people around the world. People all over the world were overwhelmed by the introduction of such a grand event. Therefore, it established many new yoga centers in India as well as overseas.
It is a matter of pride for Indians that our ancient art of keeping the mind and body fit has been accepted and recognized worldwide. India is a country of much such wealth and Indians are fortunate to have got one of them and gave to the world.
